Why they are here
An escaped slave and Maroon leader whose campaign against the plantation owners became a legend of resistance.
Mackandal was accused of organising a poisoning conspiracy against the colonists and was burned in Cap-Français in 1758. Stories of his survival spread among the enslaved, and he appears in Alejo Carpentier's novel The Kingdom of This World.
