Hector Hyppolite
1894 – 1948
Vodou priest and master of Haitian painting
Distinguished is level 3 of 4 in the Haiti Hall of Fame: sustained excellence over a career, widely honoured at home. See how the levels work.
Why they are here
A house painter and Vodou priest from Saint-Marc whose visionary paintings launched the 'Haitian Renaissance' of the 1940s.
Discovered by the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince, Hyppolite painted the spirits of Vodou in vivid colour. André Breton bought his work and helped make Haitian art known internationally.
