Why they are here
A Catholic priest from the slums of Port-au-Prince who won the 1990 election by a landslide, Haiti's first free presidential vote.
Aristide was overthrown by a military coup in 1991, restored in 1994 with the help of a US-led intervention, elected again in 2000 and forced out again in 2004.
His opponents and human rights groups accused his second government of using armed gangs against critics and of corruption, which he denied.
